Ed began coxing at university in 1997 and since then has coxed at a number of clubs in Bristol and on the Tideway. A multi-lane umpire, he is also Honorary Secretary of the British Rowing Championships and in charge of logistics for the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta. Ed was Chairman of the Race Committee for Putney Town Regatta from 2007 to 2013 and Chairman in 2014.  He was Honorary Match Director of the 2009 and 2013 Home International Regattas at Holme Pierrepont. Ed also undertakes race reporting duties at HRR and was part of the timing team for the 2005 World Cup and 2006 World Championships. Ed was previously Honorary Secretary of the TRRC between 2004 and 2005.
