Important: Remembrance Sunday 2018

At the Thames Regional Rowing Council meeting on the 16th of October, we discussed the forthcoming Remembrance Day which falls on a Sunday. As you are no doubt aware this year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 and as such is of particular poignancy.

Every year we ask clubs and their members to observe a moment of silence even if they are out on the water at 11 am on Remembrance Day. For the 100th anniversary, we discussed an appropriate way to mark what is a particularly significant moment in history.

Virtually every rowing club that was in existence during one of the world wars or subsequently has lost a member or members in the line of duty somewhere in the world. We felt an appropriate way to commemorate this loss to our clubs and our community was to mark it with not just a moment of silence, but also a visual representation of this loss. We would like to invite clubs to participate in Blades of Remembrance: At 11 am on the 11th November 2018 we ask club members, to stand in front of their clubs and layout/ display a club blade to commemorate each member that they have lost to war.

Many clubs are newly formed and only recently started in the sport, however, we would also invite them to support their neighbouring clubs and the wider community by assembling at their club as an act of remembrance.

This has been sent not only to the TRRC (for circulation within the region) but also colleagues for RRC’s across the country to invite them to join the Thames Region in this act of remembrance.
