PLA & TRRC Announce Rowing Code Winners

By: p.r.

As the Tideway Rowing Code was launched just over a year ago, the PLA and TRRC have recently announced those clubs that have come out as the best at implementing the new rules.

There are three prizes to award;

  • Overall Winner,
  • Runner Up and
  • Most Improved.

The first two prizes are for the clubs with the least amount of disciplinary points, relative to number of members in the club.  Most improved is for the club that has made the most dramatic improvement in its on water conduct since the introduction of the code.

In reverse order (as is traditional in such matters!), the awards have gone to:

Most Improved –  Imperial College Boat Club
Runner Up –   Auriol Kensington Boat Club
Overall Winner –  Tideway Scullers School

The overall winner will receive a cheque for a £1000 in a ceremony on November 29th, with the other two clubs both receiving £500 at the same occasion.

Our congratulations go to these three clubs in their efforts to keep the tideway a safe and enjoyable place for all rowers.  The winners were closely followed by a number of other clubs, who were in some cases only the wrong side of a bridge arch away from a cheque!

Both the PLA & the TRRC have been impressed with the way that the rowing community has taken to the new rules, and the drop in incidents has proven the effectiveness of the code.  We would also like to take this opportunity to thank those club members who have given of their time to the rowing disciplinary code panel.  They have helped to ensure that all clubs have been fairly treated, representing as they do all the different types of club on the river.

It is our hope that with the final phase of buoyage and signage completed by the end of this year, the code will be even easier to follow – making the river as safe as it can be for all.
