Is your club inclusive of disabled people?
Please note that this information only applies to clubs in Greater London
More and more clubs are trying to attract disabled people to their clubs, but how can you make sure that your efforts will help retain them as members of your club?
To support mainstream and disability sport groups to become more inclusive of disabled people the London Sports Forum for Disabled People (LSF) have developed the Club Health Check kit. ‘Inclusive and Active’ Club Support Scheme (IACS). IACS incorporates three levels with five areas of development including;
- Participation and Resources
- Communication and Consultation
- Policy and Procedures
- Recruitment and Staff Training
- Accessibility and Facilities
Key outcomes of IACS will include;
- Better club links with disabled members, participants and community groups
- Clubs auditing their own practices
- Clubs using London Sports Forum for Disabled People for support
IACS does not stipulate set time scales so clubs can work through the recommendations at an achievable pace. By using this resource clubs will become a welcoming place for disabled people and, by ensuring everyone can take part in a sport or activity of their choice, clubs will potentially increase their membership.
A copy of IACS is available from London Sports Forum for Disabled People please contact Catherine Gurney on Tel: 020 7717 1699 or e-mail : info(at)londonsportsforum.org.uk
